Crimestoppers is an independent charity helping law enforcement to locate criminals and solve crimes. People can pass on information about crime via anonymous means – either a 24/7 phone number, 0800 555 111, or a Giving Information Form online.
Reporting the effectiveness of its work is essential and, for three years in a row, Felton Communications has trusted totalsurf to advise, host and build a website dedicated to this reportage.
Our initial brief was to assess the Google Analytics from the old site and advise the best way forward. We discovered that most visits were actually attempted hacks from outside of the UK, which were making it difficult to gauge how many genuine visits had been made. As the site did not need to be updated on a frequent basis – as it provides an annual report – we advised building a static HTML site, updating it annually. This ensured that no server side code, PHP or MySQL database was used and could therefore not be hacked.
Since the site rebuild, the number of hacking attempts has dropped significantly and Crimestoppers is now safe in the knowledge that its site will not be hacked. It can also now clearly measure the success of the site by the number of genuine visitors in the site analysis.
