What Is Skyscraping?

The process of skyscraping is an incredibly effective link-building campaign.
Skyscraping involves three key steps:

  • Finding content that has performed well from an SEO perspective, which is worthy of links.
Producing an equivalent piece of content, which is of an even higher quality than the original article.
Reaching out to people who covered that original piece and requesting a link to the improved content.
  • Skyscraping is based around creating the highest quality piece of content on a particular topic while leveraging it to win those high-quality links. It’s the process of convincing those who have links to a specific piece of content that your content is much better and therefore of a higher value to them to link to.
  • It’s quite similar to our ‘Competitor Imitation’ service. However, rather than looking at your competitors’ entire backlink profile, you’re examining specific content pieces to determine their ‘link-worthiness’.

Once we identify which content has already generated links, we work together with you to create a new-and-improved piece of well-written, evergreen content. This improves on all other existing content available.

Once this content has been written, ideally by our in-house copywriting team, we reach out to all useful websites and sources linking to the competitor’s content. We then politely request they link to the improved, higher-quality content as a better resource for their audience (therefore, more link-worthy). As a result, both websites are getting more out of it than before.

Skyscraping is a link-building strategy that can be tremendously beneficial to a client if performed regularly and correctly. Not just because of the increased visibility, but also to have even higher-value content to promote.

We can even carry out a variation of skyscraping, known as reverse skyscraping. This is more or less the same, only rather than sourcing content which has performed well, we find content that hasn’t performed well, but has the potential to.
