Job title: Copywriter
Education:
History: The Long and Winding Road of Nick’s varied career has spanned numerous industries and continents. He joined totalsurf at the start of 2023. Previously, as Editor and Copywriter at the bed company Dreams, Nick worked on several award-winning marketing campaigns, partnering with Special Olympics GB, Team GB and ParalympicsGB. He was Specialist Content Creator for the global B2B tech marketing specialists Whiteoaks International and at the dental marketing specialist Manon, where he learned pretty much everything there is to know about tooth implants and dentists’ drills!
In 2012, Nick’s career took a 6,000-mile detour when he emigrated with his family to South America, where he lived beside the sea, in Recife, North East, Brazil, for six years. In between drinking‘ caipirinhas,’ while lazing about in a hammock, he used his communication skills to create a business teaching English to private students.
Nick started as a newspaper journalist, covering crime reporting, local news and entertainment on The Newark Advertiser. He interviewed a ‘glittering list’ of celebrities like Dave Prowse (Darth Vader), ‘World’s Strongest Man’ Geoff Capes, comedic legend Ken Dodd, and MPs Kenneth Clarke and William Hague. He was later Senior Press Officer at Nottingham Trent University for four years.
Copy: Nick writes acres of copy for many clients, and no two days are the same for him. If he’s not writing blog posts, he could be on a video call with a client planning a case study. High-ranking keywords play a large part in his writing, and he’s always got this research to hand, so you know the content will be instrumental in driving organic traffic.
Music: Nick’s a massive music fan who likes nothing more than listening to live music outdoors in the sunshine (while drinking a cold beer). He loves all genres of music, from soul and jazz to rock and pop, but especially 90s hip hop. A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Outkast, De La Soul, and current artists like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and the incredible Little Simz are his favourites. A life-long Beatles obsessive (spot the reference at the start of this bio?), Nick’s music knowledge has been put to the test on numerous pub quiz teams.
Travel: When he gets away from enjoying being a dad to two young rascals, Nick loves nothing more than exploring the most exciting parts of the world. So far, his travels have taken him to places as diverse as Ukraine, Russia, Siberia, China, Vietnam and Cambodia, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. His favourite memories include skydiving above the ‘Lord of the Rings mountains’ in New Zealand and night-time scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef in Oz. However, his top travel recommendation is seeing the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro mountains; in his opinion “the best view in the world!”
“In the words of Jay Abraham, “Make your copy straightforward to read, understand and use. Use easy words; those that are used for everyday speech. Use phrases that are not too imprecise and very understandable. Do not be too stuffy; remove pompous words and substitute them with plain words. Minimise complicated gimmicks and constructions. If you can’t give the data directly and briefly, you must consider writing the copy again.”
