As we reflect on our journey from a one-man operation to a thriving agency that has just expanded into a brand-new office, we invite you to join us in exploring the pivotal moments and guiding principles that have shaped our success.
Twenty years ago, totalsurf’s managing director and founder, Chris Brown, stood at a crossroads. Faced with the allure of a world-travelling adventure and an irresistible business opportunity, Chris took a decision that would change the course of his life.
Opting for a shortened but enriching journey through East Asia and the US, Chris returned home with a vision. He seized the chance to work on a large estate agent’s website, laying the foundation for what would become totalsurf. From the outset, Chris demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit, collaborating with a design agency while focusing on the technical aspects of website development.
In 2004, when search engine optimisation was barely on the radar, Chris’s foresight led him to identify a significant market opportunity. totalsurf pivoted to focus on SEO, a specialisation that has remained at the core of our services to this day.
This early adoption positioned us as industry leaders, allowing us to grow and evolve in the rapidly changing digital field.
As totalsurf’s reputation grew, so did the demands on Chris’s time. What started in a home office soon expanded to a London location, marking the beginning of a boom period. However, success brought its challenges. During a work-interrupted Florida vacation, Chris realised he faced a critical decision: risk burnout or expand the team.
After some intensive business coaching, Chris chose growth. This pivotal moment in 2014 led to the expansion of the totalsurf team, a decision that has propelled the company to new heights ever since.
Reflecting on totalsurf’s growth, Chris shares his management philosophy: “totalsurf has grown by employing brilliant people who I trust will deliver. My strategy has been to hand the keys over to the team and let everyone drive themselves and the business forward, whilst I steer and deliver new business.”
This approach emphasises the importance of diversity in skills and perspectives. “Employ people who may do things differently to you,” Chris advises. “As long as they are excellent at what they do, give them the autonomy to do it.”
Over the past two decades, the digital marketing arena has undergone seismic shifts, with Google’s rise to dominance being one of the most significant. Chris notes that while technical expertise remains highly important, content authenticity has become crucial.
“It’s about aligning that content strategy and the site structure to what people are searching for and providing the information they need,” Chris explains. “You have to have brilliant unique content that engages with people—that’s how you win in SEO.”
Looking to the future, Chris remains sceptical of AI’s role in content creation, emphasising the importance of genuine, factually accurate content that builds trust with users.
As totalsurf celebrates 20 years of innovation, adaptation, and growth, we look forward to continuing our journey at the forefront of digital marketing. Here’s to the next 20 years of helping businesses thrive in the digital world!
