What Zero-Click Searches Means for SEO

5th November 2025 by Nick

The challenge of zero-click searches has loomed large since Google first introduced featured snippets. This changed how users interact with search results by providing immediate answers without requiring a click. As we head closer to 2026, SEOs who currently rely on search traffic for growth will have to adapt to this new reality or get left behind.

The data paints a sobering picture. In 2024, 59.7% of EU Google searches resulted in zero clicks, with searchers either ending their session entirely (around 37% of the time) or changing their search query to something else (about 22% of the time). More concerningly, once you remove clicks going to Google-owned properties, only 374 of every thousand searches resulted in a click to the open web.

These figures confirm an upward trend as zero-click results have grown from earlier benchmarks, demonstrating that this phenomenon is accelerating. The question facing marketers isn’t whether zero-click searches will affect their business. It will. It’s now about how they will respond.

The New Reality for SEO

SEO isn’t about gaming the system. It’s not even about manipulating search engines. It’s about making your business findable when people are actively looking for what you offer. When someone searches for “accountant near me” or “best Italian restaurant Reading,” they’re already interested in purchasing. The question is whether they’ll find your business or your competitors’.

The principle is straightforward: search engines want to show users the most relevant, useful results. If your website clearly explains what you do, where you’re located, and demonstrates expertise in your field, search engines will reward you with better visibility. This is all about clear communication and good business practice.

A lot of business leaders still assume that SEO requires constant attention or expensive monthly contracts. Whilst ongoing effort certainly helps, the biggest impact often comes from getting the basics right once. As such, a well-structured website with clear information about your services, contact details, and opening hours will outperform a flashy site that leaves visitors confused about what you do.

The AI Overviews Factor

Could AI Overviews (AIOs) be contributing to this trend? The timeline suggests a more complex picture. Whilst AIOs weren’t yet showing up in a significant portion of searches in mid-2024, by September 2024, six per cent of informational keywords generated AI Overviews, which had grown to 11.37% by March 2025; a 91% increase within six months.

Furthermore, AI Overviews appeared in 33% of keywords by November 2024, indicating a rapid expansion.

The impact on publisher traffic has been measurable:

  • The majority of Digital Content Next publisher members have experienced traffic losses from Google search between 1% and 25% due to AI Overviews.
  • Additionally, zero-click searches increased from 56% to 69% between May 2024 and May 2025, though this captures trends in addition to AI Overviews alone.

If AIOs continue their trajectory, they’ll likely increase zero-click searches rather than decrease them. The technology is designed to synthesise information from multiple sources and present it directly on the search results page, radically changing user behaviour and expectations.

The Zero-Click Ecosystem

The growth of answer engines and more people using social media platforms as search destinations are important aspects of the zero-click trend. Platforms such as Perplexity, LinkedIn, Facebook and others work hard to keep users from clicking away from their properties. These walled gardens compete directly with traditional search engines whilst simultaneously functioning as them, creating an environment where users find answers without ever reaching the open web.

This fragmentation of search behaviour has launched a new chapter in how people discover and consume information online. Users no longer default to Google as their sole search destination, and when they do use traditional search engines, they’re often finding what they need without leaving the results page.

Adapting to the New Reality

There are still plenty of organic clicks to be had. At totalsurf, we’re experts in getting them. However, we’ve reached a place where ignoring zero-click searches is no longer viable. That means SEOs need to have zero-click search strategies in their marketing plan.

To adapt successfully, there needs to be an understanding that visibility doesn’t always equal traffic. Appearing in featured snippets, AI Overviews, or knowledge panels provides brand exposure and authority, even when users don’t click through. Smart SEOs will optimise for these placements whilst also creating content compelling enough to drive clicks when users want deeper engagement.

The metrics of success must evolve as well. Click-through rate and referral traffic are still important, but they’re no longer the only measures of SEO performance. Brand awareness, query coverage and answer accuracy have become equally vital indicators of search presence and effectiveness.
