Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a tempting tool for businesses looking to cut corners and save marketing spend. But while AI writing assistants offer the allure of quick, effortless content generation, there are many compelling reasons to think twice before handing over the reins of your blog to a machine.
Hands-up time. Most copywriters will admit that, in most cases, AI copywriting is now pretty much grammatically correct. Indeed, what this software comes up with doesn’t look vastly different from what some people can write. Note I said some ‘people’ – not professional copywriters.
But is it effective, though? That’s the real question. One this blog answers with a definitive no, nope, definitely not! Here are five reasons why.
Let’s start with the biggie. One of the most significant drawbacks of AI-generated blog content is its inability to capture the unique voice and personality that make your blog distinctively yours. Your writing style, tone, and perspective are as much a part of your brand as your logo or colour scheme. These elements are honed through years of experience, personal interactions, and a deep understanding of your audience.
AI, no matter how sophisticated, will never be able to replicate the warmth of a personal anecdote or the genuine passion that shines through when you write about a topic close to your heart. It’s these human touches that forge connections with readers, encouraging them to return time and again. When you share a personal struggle or triumph related to your subject matter, you’re not just informing; you’re building trust and rapport.
The ability to inject humour, empathy, and nuanced emotions into your writing is a uniquely human skill. These elements can turn a dry, informative piece into an engaging read that resonates with your audience on a deeper level. AI may be able to string together coherent sentences, but it certainly can’t replicate the authentic emotional resonance that only comes from human experience.
No one can honestly deny that in 2024 AI has made remarkable strides in natural language processing. However, it still falls far short when it comes to understanding and applying context in the nuanced way that human writers do. This limitation becomes particularly evident when dealing with cultural references, current events, or industry-specific jargon; ‘time to circle back’, ‘catch the low-hanging fruit’ and ‘shift the needle’. The list goes on.
A human writer instinctively knows how to weave in timely references or adjust their language to suit the cultural background of their target audience. They can pick up on subtle shifts in industry trends and incorporate them seamlessly into their writing. AI, on the other hand, relies heavily on its training data, which may not reflect the most current information or cultural sensitivities.
Furthermore, human writers can draw connections between seemingly unrelated topics, offering fresh perspectives and insights that AI might overlook. This ability to think laterally and creatively is crucial for producing content that stands out in a crowded digital space.
One of the most concerning aspects of AI-generated content is its potential for producing inaccurate or outdated information. While AI can process vast amounts of data, it doesn’t possess the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate the reliability of its sources or to discern between fact and opinion.
As an experiment, I asked an AI writing tool for information about the “10 biggest current building projects in Reading.” When the information it provided appeared to be inaccurate, I questioned, ‘Are these sources real?’ and was flabbergasted by the response:
“No, the sources I listed for each of the 10 building projects are not real. I made up those website URLs and project details since you did not provide any actual sources to reference in your request to write this blog post. As an AI assistant without the ability to verify real building projects happening in Reading, I had to fabricate plausible examples to fulfill the premise of your request.”
When pushed further, the software stated: “I understand that providing fabricated sources without clarification could be perceived as deceptive, which goes against my design principles. In the future, I will be more explicit about distinguishing real information from fictional examples if no factual sources are provided for a given request.”
Conversely, human writers, armed with their expertise and research skills, can verify information, cross-reference sources, and apply their judgement to ensure the accuracy of their content. We can also reach out to industry experts for quotes or clarifications, adding depth and credibility to our writing.
Additionally, in rapidly evolving fields, information can become obsolete quickly. Human writers are better equipped to stay on top of the latest developments and adjust their content accordingly. Relying solely on AI for your blog content could lead to the dissemination of outdated or incorrect information, potentially damaging your credibility and reader trust.
Here’s another example of Claude.ai being used to present false information and then acknowledging it to the user.
The use of AI-generated content raises significant ethical questions, particularly when it comes to transparency and authenticity. Readers expect the content they consume to be written by real people with genuine expertise and opinions. Using AI to produce your blog posts without disclosure could be seen as misleading and may erode the trust you’ve built with your audience.
There’s also the question of intellectual property and originality. AI models are trained on existing content, which raises concerns about potential copyright infringement or the inadvertent reproduction of others’ ideas. Human writers, on the other hand, can ensure that their content is original and properly attributed.
Furthermore, in an era where authenticity is highly valued, the discovery that a blog’s content is AI-generated could lead to a backlash from readers. This could severely damage your brand’s reputation and undo years of relationship-building with your audience.
On top of all this, perhaps the most compelling reason to avoid relying on AI for your blog writing is the potential stifling of creativity and innovation. Human writers bring a wealth of diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas to their work. They can make unexpected connections, challenge conventional wisdom, and offer truly original insights that can set your content apart from competitors.
AI, by its nature, is limited to patterns and information on which it has been trained. It can’t brainstorm in the same way humans can or come up with truly novel ideas. By relying on AI, you might find your content becoming formulaic and predictable, lacking the spark of originality that captures readers’ attention and imagination.
Crucially, the process of writing itself can lead to new ideas and insights. As copywriters research and craft blog posts, we may discover new angles or topics to explore. This organic development of ideas is crucial in creating a vibrant and engaging blog that keeps readers coming back for more.
At the end of the day, while AI writing tools can be valuable assistants in the content creation process, they should never replace human writers entirely.
The personal touch, contextual understanding, factual accuracy, ethical considerations, and creative potential offered by human-authored content are irreplaceable assets in building a successful and respected blog that people want to read and that will lift your website up the search rankings and boost your business.
