It started off as a fun way for the team here at totalsurf to let off steam at the end of a hectic working month. But since March 2022, our in-house gaming tournament has levelled up to become a permanent fixture on the calendar, with the talented team of SEO and copywriting champions battling it out to take home a specially-commissioned trophy.
Indeed, the whole totalsurf crew takes this gaming competition seriously. Late afternoon on the final Friday of each month is blocked out on the office calendar to host the tournament, when – just for a few hours – fun takes priority.
“The tournament has grown and evolved into a really intense event that everyone on the team really looks forward to, wanting to get their hands on the trophy,” says totalsurf director Chris Brown, a former gamer himself who won the first competition.
“The event is fantastic for team morale. When else do you get the chance to scream, shout and insult your work mates – even the boss – and end up laughing and smiling, as it’s all done in a healthy competitive spirit.”
“It’s just a great way to celebrate and relax at the end of the month after the team has been working hard to get the results our clients expect.”
Each member of our team is given the chance to select their videogame of choice for the event – from first person shoot ‘em ups, party games, racing, and sports – no gaming genre is out of bounds.
So far it has proved to be evenly matched because everyone on the team is either a gamer, or used to be. Taking turns to choose the game fought over each month gives everyone the chance to shine. As a result the trophies have been shared across the team, with no one standing head and shoulders above the rest.
However, that’s not to say the spirit of competition isn’t highly intense. Some of the team have even been known to go to the trouble of bringing in their own dedicated gaming PCs and controllers from home, all in an attempt to get the edge on their colleagues.
The team has even created their own trophies for the winner to take home including the creation of a specially 3D printed Star Cup from Mario Kart. Games played have included mini-game based Pummel Party, Nintendo Switch Sports, Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike, Fall Guys, Mario Kart 8, and, of course the multi-player classic Mario Party.
Our tournament is one of hundreds of esports events that take place all around the globe, from small regional tournaments to huge leagues with professional esports teams. According to the BBC, these events are set to grow in popularity even further in 2023.
