Google wants you to know your onions

21st June 2019 by Chris Brown

You know that bloke at the bar (yeah, the one who NEVER leaves the pub), well he knows his onions!

Or at least he thinks he does! People probably believed everything he said for a while and then they started to feel a little unsure and realised that he was an “expert” in everything (and a master of nothing!). After all, his degree at the “University of Life”, trumps anything anyone with real knowledge of a subject has.

But Google spotted him quite early on, and decided to simply ignore him. And it knows how knowledgeable you are as well…

It does this through some pretty complex algorithms, it likes to know:

  • You have knowledge of your subject
  • Other people value your knowledge
Two whole onions and raw onion slices on a board—no car hire excess in the kitchen!.

The first item is pretty straightforward. If you want to show anyone you’re an expert at doing what you do, you can show them and also talk about it. A lot! Let’s look at the actual onions scenario. If you wanted to become an expert in onions, you couldn’t mention it only once on your site, Google just wouldn’t think much of you. But if you started talking about all the different types of onions there are, it’s going to pay a lot more attention to you.

If you start mentioning:

  • red
  • brown
  • spring
  • yellow
  • shallots

and more, it’s going to start to pay more attention to you. If you then start telling people how it’s closely related to the garlic family, it’s getting way more interested!

People start to know that you know your onions, and they love what you have to say about them. They love it so much that they then start to visit your site on a regular basis to read all about the interesting world of onions, checking out your “onion cam” and reading your blog which you’ve cleverly called “Diary of tears – an onion fan’s log”. They then share stuff you post on social media as well, and you now have a following and you’re becoming the go-to person for onion facts.

Google starts to see that people are visiting your site and interacting with you and you know what, Google then says (OK, it doesn’t say anything, it’s a massive collection of servers and code, but you know what I am trying to explain!) “this man knows his onions!” – and it starts to rank you for all onion related facts and information.

This is what you need to do for your business to rank on Google through SEO.

You’re hopefully already an expert in what you or your business does, so you should be able to write some great content.

But how do you know what people are searching for?

You need some amazing keyword research to do that, and we will be talking about that in our next blog, so make sure you come back in about a week to read how to find out what people are searching for.
